What to do when an invoice is not paid on time?

Invoices in Get Paid never truly expire, but there are important things to know about overdue invoices and how long customers can pay them digitally. This guide explains invoice payment statuses and what to do when an invoice has been unpaid for an extended period.

This guide covers:

Understanding invoice statuses

Open invoices

When you first create and send an invoice, it displays with an "Open" status. Customers can pay the invoice digitally through the Get Paid payment link.

Overdue invoices

After the due date passes, the invoice status automatically changes from "Open" to "Overdue." The invoice remains fully payable through the digital payment link.

Most invoices are actually paid after their due date, so an "Overdue" status is normal and doesn't prevent payment.

Payment link expiration

If an invoice remains unpaid for 12 months after the due date, the status remains "Overdue" but the digital payment link stops functioning. Customers will no longer be able to pay through the Get Paid link.

What to do when a payment link expires

If your invoice has been unpaid for more than 12 months after the due date and the payment link no longer works, follow these steps:

1- In the left sidebar, select Get Paid.

2- Select the Invoices tab.

3- Find the overdue invoice you want to reactivate.

4- Select the three dots next to the invoice.

5- From the action menu, select Edit.

6- Update the due date to a current or future date.

7- Select Save and share to save your changes and resend the invoice to your customer.

8- You can choose between emailing the invoice to your customer or copying the payment link and sharing it with your customer.

That's it! Your customer will now be able to pay the invoice digitally through the new payment link. The updated due date reactivates the digital payment functionality.

When updating the due date, consider setting it to a reasonable timeframe that gives your customer enough time to process the payment while keeping your records current.
